An appraisal is not only something the employee should give attention to, Managers and HR professionals also need to give proper attention to it, especially when designing and developing an appraisal. It is important to ask the right questions and set the appropriate people as evaluators when designing and developing an appraisal.
Moreover, it is important to set up an unbiased set of evaluators to ensure that fair judgments are being made regarding an employee. With OrangeHRM, a user can easily create customizable questions and set up their own evaluators and make other appraisal changes also. Admin can change information such as evaluators and due dates as well as the form design of an appraisal once created.
To access this feature go to: Performance -> Appraisals -> Appraisal List. The following screen will appear:
Details Tab
Step 1 – Click the icon which appears beside an appraisal relating to an employee in the above screen. This will bring you to the 'Details' tab as follows:
Step 2 - Complete the following fields in the above-mentioned screen in order to edit appraisal-specific information for an employee.
Field | Description |
Employee Name |
The name of the employee for whom the appraisal has been created. This field cannot be edited as the appraisal has been previously created for a particular employee. |
Description | Edit the previously created description. |
Appraisal Cycle | The user can change the previously selected appraisal cycle by choosing an appraisal cycle from the dropdown. |
Template | The appraisal is based on a pre-defined template. Therefore, the template cannot be changed as it has been previously selected. |
From / To | Can edit the previously defined time period to a preferred time period. |
Due Date | Can edit the previously defined due date to the preferred due date. |
Step 3- Click 'Save' after defining the above fields.
Form Design Tab
It is possible to change the design of the appraisal form by going to the 'Form Design' tab. Here you can add sections and weightage to the sections.
Step 1 – Click the icon beside the section name to delete a section.
Step 2 – Click the icon beside a competency, goal, or question to delete them.
Step 3 – Click the icon beside the section name to edit the section. Upon clicking this icon the following screen appears:
Step 4 – Complete the following fields in the above-mentioned screen.

Name of the section. |
Section Weight | The weightage you wish to allocate to this section out of 100 (which is the maximum value that can be provided for a section). |
Include | The user can either include Competencies Goals or Questions as a section. |
Step 5 – The user can select competency/competencies by clicking the checkbox for each competency.
Step 6- Upon following step 5 the user can click the 'Include in Section' checkbox which is beside the competency in order to include the competency /competencies in that section.
Step 7 - After including the competency in the section the user can provide a weightage for the chosen competency/competencies.
Step 8- Click 'Save' after making all the necessary changes.
Form Design Tab - Add a New Section
Step 1 - Click the 'Add' button on the 'Form Design' tab.
Step 2 – Complete the following fields.

Give a weightage for the section. Note that the total weightage for all sections should be 100. To allow for a new section, the weight of an existing section(s) must be reduced. |
Include | Choose what the section should include, whether goals or competencies, or questions or the user may choose all three options. |
Step 3 – Click 'Save'. Upon clicking 'Save' the new section is visible in the 'Form Design' screen. The user can click the icon and add goals, competencies, and questions to this newly created section.
Optional: After making all the additions and after doing all the edits the user can click the button to get a preview of what the final appraisal looks like.
Evaluators
The user can add or remove the existing evaluators of the appraisal. The below screen illustrates the 'Evaluators' tab.
Step 1 – Complete the fields for the above-mentioned screen.

Main Evaluator |
Change the name of the previously mentioned evaluator to a preferred name. Alternatively, the user can enable the checkbox to appoint themselves as the main evaluator. |
Supervisors | Can mention a supervisor(s) for the appraisal form. This field supports multiple entries. |
Peers | Can mention a peer(s) for the appraisal form. This field supports multiple entries. |
Step 2 – Click 'Save' after completing the above fields.
